It's not everyday that you go to the theatre and become truly moved by the art on the stage. Last night, in Cleveland's Playhouse Square, Fun Home launched its first national tour to tremendous success. The show tells the story of Alison and the life she had growing up in a small Pennsylvanian town, and the events that led to her discovering and accepting who she was. The stage show is adapted from the graphic novel, by Alison Bechdel, which is a memoir that chronicles the major parts of her life that impacted In the interval-free 100 minutes of showtime, your attention and your emotions are constantly grasped by the story of Alison that is being played out on stage. The chronology of the show is scrambled and you are continuously switching between young Alison, college-student Alison, and adult cartoonist Alison (all of whom are played by exceptionally wonderful actresses) as she looks back at her life, allowing the audience to live through her memories. The saddest moment comes when Alison realises that her coming-out, which she saw as the moment her life was only truly beginning, coincided with the end of her father's life and her mother's realisation that she had wasted her years living in marriage that was a lie. It's a strange and sad concept to think that the start of a young person's life simultaneously occurs at the same time their parent's lives are reaching their endings. Fun Home is not about a girl who had a terrible childhood, but rather it reflects on the complex issues that people can face as they get older. There are very few musicals, at least to my knowledge, that have a lesbian protagonist which is one of the things that makes this musical so important. For gay audiences, male or female, the depiction of a character who is discovering and embracing one’s sexual identity is a one they don't often see, and it should be an image that is portrayed more within theatre, tv, and movies. Go see it! __________________________________________________________ Rating: ★★★★★ Venue: Palace Theatre, Playhouse Square Comment: Such an important story and a very unconventional way of telling it. I really hope this gets transferred to the West End at some point! Have you seen Fun Home? Do you agree or disagree with any of the points I have made? If so, I'd love to here from you so send me a message and let me know which production you saw! | |
